Food Finds, Part 2

We’re back with Part 2 of my new food finds! In case you missed Part 1, you can read it here.

And without further ado…

KOMBUCHA
You know I love water, but now I’m also loving Enlightened Organic Raw Kombucha, specifically the Multi-Green flavor.

Kombucha is so healthy for you – the cultures in this effervescent drink work as a probiotic, helping your digestive system do what it needs to do. It works the way yogurt does, adding healthy bacteria to your gut, but without dairy.

Multi-Green is surprisingly sweet (sounds like it would be vegetabley, right? yeah, not so much.) with only 4 grams of sugar in the entire bottle, but with spirulina, blue green algae, and chlorella, which are three superfoods that are amazing for you. I sip it throughout the day (keeping it in the fridge, of course) so that I get a little hit of sweetness and healthy bacteria after I eat.

If you’re not digging the greens, that’s okay – Citrus and Original flavors are great, too. But Multi-Green is packing some serious nutritional punch.

POPCORN

My pick for popcorn these days is the Whole Foods 365 brand of organic, reduced fat, low-sodium popcorn. They use gmo-free corn, which is really important. And this popcorn passed the husband test, which means it tastes good and isn’t cardboardy.

BREAD

And for those of you in Southern California, I want to share with you my new favorite bread and bagel option. Silver Hills Bakery makes some awesome stuff – super healthy and oh so tasty. I’m officially head over heels for the Squirrelly bread and bagels because it tastes delicious and has the cutest name. Plus, the husband likes them.

Pick up these products at Whole Foods, Jimbo’s, Sprouts, Erewhon, or your local health food store.

Now go forth and find a fun, new healthy food this weekend!

Question of the Day:
Anyone ever have anything crazy happen on Friday the 13th?

It’s Bananas Bread

Good morning!

You know I love you folks, right?

But do you know how much?

So much that I’m now going to share with you my recipe for It’s Bananas Bread.

This is a fave recipe, folks. And it’s high time you get in the know.

This bread is bananas. It has whole wheat flour, no refined sugar, is really easy to make, and tastes AMAZING.

Can you believe?!

If you can, here’s the recipe!

Ingredients  (About 13 servings)
1 1/4 cup of whole wheat flour
1 1/4 tsp of baking powder
1/2 tsp of baking soda
2 1/2 tsp of cinnamon
1/8 tsp of nutmeg
1/8 tsp salt
2 egg whites
1 1/2 cups of ripe bananas
2 tbsp of applesauce
3 tbsp of coconut oil
2 tsp of vanilla
30g of coconut sugar
4 tbsp of coconut nectar
1/4 cup of chopped walnuts

Directions

In a bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt.

In larger bowl mix together bananas, egg whites, “sugar”, oil and vanilla.

Stir in flour mixture until moistened.

Add in 3/4 of the walnuts.

Pour into sprayed 8x4x2 inch loaf pan.

Sprinkle the rest of the walnuts on the top.

Bake at 350 for 45 to 50 mins until toothpick comes out clean. Cool bread in pan for 10 mins.

Remove from pan and enjoy.

And you will because it’s so good, so good…

Got the Munchies?

Seems some of you liked the looks of that superfood oatmeal from yesterday’s post. Thanks for the great feedback – I hope you got to give it a go today!

So now that I’ve established that I’ve got some hungry readers, I wanted to give you some snack ideas. I should tell you that back in the day, I was known for my “afterschool munchies.” I must admit, this sounds like a recreational drug, but it was actually a bag full of snacks that I would dive into at the end of the school day. Seems I’ve been a lifelong snacker!

Okay, folks, here we go. My top 5 quick, easy, super healthy snacks:

1. An apple with peanut butter.

A perfect pairing. Make sure to buy organic apples, as conventional apples top the list for highest pesticide residue. I’m loving gala these days. Also make sure to choose a high quality peanut butter without added sugar or preservatives, and preferably one that’s organic. I personally recommend Maranatha Creamy with Sea Salt. You can even sprinkle some cinnamon on for extra flavor. (Cinnamon is great for you – I promise that post is coming soon!)

2. Avocado on whole wheat bread.

Get a good dose of fiber, heart healthy fats, and protein here. Sprinkle on spices like cayenne pepper, turmeric, and coriander for an extra boost of flavor and health benefits. Add some romaine or cucumber slices on top for  crunch. Choose a bread that is low in sugar and doesn’t have too many ingredients. My choice is Trader Joe’s Sprouted Whole Wheat Fiber Bread.

3. Seaweed with avocado, cucumber, and cheese.

Fill a sheet of nori with avocado, cucumber, and your choice of cheese – preferably organic cheese! For those who don’t eat dairy, it tastes just as good without the cheese. Or sub in dairy-free cheese. Either way you’re getting the heart healthy fats from the avocado and lots of vitamins and nutrients from the seaweed. And a good, refreshing crunch from the cucumbers.

4. Steamed asparagus.

Ready in 5 minutes, steamed asparagus is a delicious snack all on it’s own or with a squeeze of lemon and/or olive oil drizzled on top. As far as veggies go, asparagus has a good amount of protein – 1 cup has only 30 calories but 4 grams of protein! Additionally, it is not a vegetable you have to buy organic, although you can if you want. Cook it al dente and you get a nice little crunch. Easy to make and easy to eat.

5. Bell pepper.

It seems people either love ’em or hate ’em, but this time of year a red or orange bell pepper couldn’t be sweeter, crunchier, or more delicious. Cut one up  or just bite right in. Great when you’re on the go. Make sure to buy these organic, though, as they are on the list of dirtiest produce, which means they have the highest pesticide residue.
